Nigerians spoke for 42.75 billion minutes in 2011 — NCCv

 

Talk time on telecommunications networks in Nigeria declined by 15.62 billion minutes in 2011, the Nigerian Communications Commission has said.

Information obtained from the website of the regulatory agency on Thursday showed that Nigerians spoke for 58.37 billion minutes in 2010. This, however, declined to 42.75 billion minutes by 2011.

The traffic statistics provided by NCC showed that the talk time for 2010 was made up of 28,571,707,002 outgoing minutes and 29,794,223,434 incoming minutes.

The 2011 statistics, on the other hand, were made up of 20,822,689,700 outgoing minutes and 21,924,116,054 incoming minutes.

This showed that between 2010 and 2011, talk time on the networks declined by 15,619,154,682 minutes or by 26.78 per cent.

Guinean governor charged with torture

 

CONAKRY (AFP) – The governor of Guinea’s capital Conakry has been charged with alleged acts of torture committed in October 2010, a judicial source said Saturday, in a move praised by rights groups.
Sekou Resco Camara was questioned and indicted by a Dixxin court, on the outskirts of Conakry, on Thursday after prosecutors last year opened an investigation into the case, the source said.
The governor is accused of arbitrarily arresting and detaining several people who were then subjected to “acts of torture” in his presence.
The former head of the Guinea army, General Nouhou Thiam, and the army’s deputy chief of staff, Commander Abubakar Sidiki Camara, are also suspects in the case.
At the time of the alleged crimes, Guinea was led by General Sekouba Konate’s transitional government. Following November 2010 elections, Konate was replaced by Alpha Conde — the country’s first democratically elected president.
Rights groups said the charges were an important step for a country marked by a history of political and military violence.
“This is very good news, carrying a strong message: no one is above the law, not even the forces of law and order,” said Thierno Maadjou Sow, the head of the OGDH Guinean human rights group.
“With the indictment of Conakry’s governor for acts of very serious nature, the Guinean justice sends an important signal in the fight against impunity,” said Souhayr Belhassen, head of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).

A 27-year-old woman, Mary Sunday, has been in the hospital bed at Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital seven months after she was allegedly attacked by her fiancé, Corporal Isaac Gbanwuan, with a pot of boiling stew and a lighted stove. It was learnt that Sunday had lost her ears due to the attack.

Before the attack, which took place in August 2012, Sunday, was to report for training at the Police Academy, Kano as a cadet officer.

Goldie Harvey Dies after Brief Illness

Barely days after she came back from the Grammys in the United States of America, Nigeria's version of Lady Gaga, Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey, popularly known as Goldie, is dead.

Although details of her death was sketchy as at press time, THISDAY gathered that the musician popularly known for her collaboration with Eldee D Don died at Reddington Hospital at about 11 p.m. last night.

Her death was allegedly confirmed by her best friend and entertainer, Derenle Edun.
Also some posts by her management on some of her social media platforms; twitter and facebook, confirmed her death.
The posts read: "It is with heavy heart that I have to announce to you all that Goldie passed on this night (last night) shortly after arriving Lagos from Los Angeles. May her soul rest in the eternal peace of the Lord... Amin."

Nigeria graduates to 30th place in fifa rankings

The February edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking is dominated by the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. By
claiming their third title, Nigeria (30th, up 22) have not only ended a 19-year drought since they last won the tournament, but have also climbed 22 places to 30th – their best ranking since August 2010 – while beaten finalists Burkina Faso (55th, up 37) have moved up a massive 37 places to 55th. Hosts South Africa (60th, up 25) have also enjoyed a significant leap of 25 places.
Although former Africa Cup of Nations winners Côte d’Ivoire (12th, up 2) bowed out at the quarter-final stage, last year’s runners-up have achieved their best-ever world ranking (12th). However, the Elephants have not made it into the top ten, where Spain (1st, unchanged) continue to reign supreme ahead of Germany (2nd, unchanged) and Argentina (3rd, unchanged). England (4th, up 2) complete the top four after their home win over Brazil.
The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 14 March 2013.

Blade Runner” Pistorius charged with murdering girlfriend

South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, known as the “Blade Runner” for his racing prosthetics, was charged on Thursday with murdering his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria.

Police said they had opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found shot dead at the scene in the upmarket Silverlakes gated community on the outskirts of the capital.
Police spokeswoman Katlego Mogale said a 9 mm pistol had been found at the scene and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody. In South Africa police do not identify suspects until they are charged in court.
“There are witnesses and they have been interviewed this morning. We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place,” police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters outside the residential complex in Pretoria.
“At this stage he is on his way to a district surgeon for medical examination and will be appearing at the Pretoria Magistrate Court at 2 pm this afternoon.”

Johannesburg’s Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was believed to have shot his girlfriend, a model, in the head and arm, although the circumstances were unclear. The radio had said before the murder charge that he might have mistaken her for a burglar.
Reeva Steenkamp was reported to have been dating Pistorius for a year. In the social pages of last weekend’s Sunday Independent she described him as having “impeccable” taste.
“His gifts are always thoughtful,” she was quoted as saying.
Some of her last Twitter postings indicated she was looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day on Thursday with him.
“What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???” she posted.
“We are all devastated. Her family is in shock,” Steenkamp’s agent, Sarita Tomlinson, told Reuters, in tears over the incident, which happened in the early hours of the morning.
“They did have a good relationship,” she said. “Nobody actually knows what happened.”

Bandits raid Nigerian bank, attack police station

A Nigerian bank and a police post were attacked by bandits overnight in Ode-Omu, Gbongan in Nigeria’s State of Osun.The robbers operated about 1a.m. and caused panic among residents of the town by shooting sporadically, witnesses said. The hoodlums escaped before the police arrived.A passer-by, identified as Tirimisiyu, was hit by a stray bullet and died before he could get medical attention.The Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, Mrs Folashade Odoro, confirmed the incident and said that the bank manager claimed the robbers stole N10 million and 6,000 dollars from the bank. She said the police had intensified efforts to arrest the robbers and had also begun investigation into the incident.

Jonathan Can’t Sign 2013 Budget This Week – Okonjo-Iweala

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has denied media reports stating that President Goodluck Jonathan is likely to sign the 2013 budget into law this week.

In a press statement signed by her Special Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, the Minister said, “whereas discussions between the Executive and the National Assembly are on-going in a cordial atmosphere, it is not yet clear when they will be concluded as much work remains to be done.
“Against this background, reports stating that the President will sign the budget this week are therefore not realistic.”
A local newspaper had reportedly quoted Mrs Okonjo Iweala as saying “We are working very well on the budget and we hope that within a week, we would be able to come to some kind of agreement. But I can’t say exactly.
“What we are finding now is that there are some grey or problematic areas that we need to iron out between us, in order for us to have a budget that is in the interest of the Nigerian people and that can be implemented and both sides would be satisfied.”
The Federal Government had presented N4.92 trillion on September 19, 2012 as the proposed 2013 budget to the National Assembly but the lawmakers in the twin Chambers passed N4.987 trillion on October 4, 2012, causing a disagreement between the two arms of government.

Six Killed, 16 Injuried in Bauchi Autocrash

 

No fewer than six persons were killed while 16 others sustained injuries Sunday in a ghastly motor accident along Bauchi/Maiduguri road, about 15 kilometres from the state capital, Bauchi.

THISDAY checks revealed that the accident, which took place around 8.14 am, involved a Nissan Urban 18-seater bus with registration number AA996TFB and a motorcycle with no registration number.

An eyewitness revealed that the motorcycle rider was the cause of the accident because he crossed the road without observing if a vehicle was coming and in the process collided with the bus.

UI admits 2,671 out of 41,367 candidates for 2012/2013 session

Prof. Isaac Adewole, Vice-Chancellor(V-C), University of Ibadan, on Friday said the institition admitted 2,671 candidates out of 41,367 candidates who applied for the 2012/2013 academic session.

Adewole said this in Ibadan while speaking at the matriculation ceremony held at the International Conference Centre of the university.
